I finally gave in. After years of fidelity to my Blackberry, I have become an Iphone user. The Iphone 5, fresh out of its packaging. I'd like to say my decision was based on a journalistic urge to stay up to date with technology. But the truth is I was fed up with seeing my wife have so much fun with Instagram and all her other apps, while all I could boast about was a handy keyboard.
A new phone for a new year. In fact, I needed the enforced break from work-related mails and calls over the Christmas period to get used to the device. One thing I've noticed is that it feels more friendly than my Blackberry. My old phone was definitely a work tool, while the Iphone has leisure uses. As such it seems a little less like a portable deadline.
For a brief period last week I was entirely out of touch. I'd taken the battery out of my old phone, my new one was not yet activated, and I'd stubbornly refused to check my mails. Life was devoted solely to family, food, good books, old movies and a little too much drinking. Then, on New Year's Eve, I switched on my Iphone and it started ringing. The world began to turn again. I recently read of a company in New York that urges its employees to ignore all work-related communications after 6pm and at weekends. Better rest makes better workers: a theory I happen to agree with. I wish you all a relaxed and restful 2013.
